DRIVERS need to be aware of hazardous patches of thick fog in coastal and hilly areas of the Isle of Wight.

The fog, according to a weather map produced by the Isle of Wight Met Service, shows fog and mist around most coastal areas, but at its thickest on downland.

The worst affected areas at the downs between Brading and Newport, in the Ventnor and Wroxall area, around Blackgang and Chale, and between Chillerton and Freshwater.  

Today, the forecast is for mild, humid and damp conditions this morning, with patchy rain, drizzle, low cloud and hill fog, according to Jamie Russell, of the Isle of Wight Met Service.

As the day goes on this will gradually break up to bring a few brighter spells by mid afternoon, but still cant rule out the odd patch of light rain locally.

Temperatures will be about 15C-16C, but dropping closer to 13C-14C during the afternoon.

Winds will be west-southwestly 14-23mph, becoming north-westerly, then northerly and finally, east-northeastly, 3-6mph, by the end of the day.

Rainfall should be between 1mm and 3mm, with at least 12mm already fallen at the Met Service's weather station in Lake since midnight.
