ONE OF the most consistently busy Isle of Wight attractions all year round and one which relies on public support — The Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary — have been dealt a blow with roadworks in Wroxall cutting them off from potentially hundreds of visitors next week.
Southern Gas Networks (SGN) — which began emergency gas works on Monday (October 21) outside the entrance to the popular animal welfare facility, albeit with temporary traffic lights in place — will be extending its operation across St Johns Road from 9.30am on Monday (October 28).

The stretch of road between St Johns Road, from outside the Donkey Sanctuary, to the Whiteley Bank roundabout, will fully close, until, currently, Friday, November 1.
It will mean no vehicular access or bus services from the north of the facility — only from the south, via Whitwell and Wroxall.
The Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary, a registered charity, needs hundreds of pounds each week to keep the sanctuary running.

"Our charity relies entirely on donations, adoptions and fundraising from the public. Without you, we wouldn't exist," the charity says on its website.
All of the profits from its cafe are used in the care of its animals.
A spokesperson for the charity said: “It’s essential to fix the gas leak for everyone’s safety.
"We’re pleased people will still be able to visit using the diversion, via Whitwell and Wroxall, and look forward to seeing visitors next week.”
On its Facebook page, one of the sanctuary's supporters, Clare Tanaka, posted: "This is such a shame for all your half term activities and potential fundraising.
"I am so sorry. I appreciate a gas leak needs fixing, but after a week of disruption already?
"No consideration for businesses and, more importantly, charities. And really, why does it all take so long? Hope your donkeys still do get visitors."
From Monday, November 4, the Donkey Sanctuary will be open five days a week, from Saturday to Wednesday.
The sanctuary will close to visitors on Thursdays and Fridays.
