A START-UP airline in Guyana has bought its first Isle of Wight-designed and built Britten-Norman aircraft to help start its commuter routes.

Xen Aviation, based in Georgetown, has signed a deal to acquire a Britten-Norman turbine-powered Islander.

The aircraft is expected to help the airline improve regional connectivity, and aid its future commuter services across Guyana.

The BN2T-4S, an advanced version of the Islander aircraft, will be the first of its kind in Guyana.

It has 30 per cent more interior space, compared to the earlier piston variant, and a significantly higher maximum take-off weight of 8,925 lbs (4,048 kg).

It is powered by twin Rolls-Royce engines, providing a range of 1,006 nm (1,863 km) and up to eight hours of endurance.

Ronaldo Alphonso, at Xen Aviation said: "We believe this variant of the Islander is a perfect fit for our mission to introduce superior safety, comfort and choice to the Guyana aviation market — targeting everyday commuters, government and international business operators, all at a competitive price."

William Hynett, chief executive at Britten-Norman, in Bembridge, said the company was delighted to confirm the order.

"It marks a significant milestone, as the first BN2T-4S Islander to be used for commuter services in Guyana," he said.
