ROWING — ITCHEN JUNIOR REGATTA
SHANKLIN-SANDOWN ROWING CLUB
AFTER another record-breaking season, Shanklin-Sandown Rowing Club enjoyed more success at the Itchen Junior Regatta last weekend.
The club recorded seven wins and five runners up spots, with the girls’ J13 coastal quad of Annabelle Steward, Poppy Lawrence, Evie Crew, Izzy Bounds and Esme Walters overcoming first race nerves to take the club’s first win of the day, while the J14 girls’ crew of Immy Burfitt, Ella Haydon, Freya Jones, Layla Katirewa and Esme followed up their victory at the South Coast Championships two weeks ago in convincing style.
The mixed crew of Adam Farley, Layla, Carter Horrix and Louis Sheasby took a comfortable win in the boys’ J14 event, while the girls’ J16 crew of Alannah Denness, Layla, Beth Katirewa and Esme, in their last race together at this age category, won by three lengths, with both crews racing in river quads for the first time.
There were wins in the J14 and J15 singles for Carter, with Louis runner-up on both occasions.
Beth won her first sculling event, the girls’ J15 race.
Ella and Layla also competed in the double for the first time, securing an excellent runner-up spot in the J14 — a great achievement considering they were competing in a coastal double against crews racing in the finer river double.
NEWPORT ROWING CLUB
NEWPORT Rowing Club’s U16 quad of William Loveday-Powell, Connor Garner, Boris Hare and Hayden Tiffin, coxed by Marianna Hare, won their straight final early in the day.
They also made the final of the River 4 category, beating Worthing, but lost to Itchen Imperial in the final.
The double of William and Boris made their final, but lost out to a strong Lymington crew.
Connor and Boris also competed in the single sculls, each finishing second in their heats.
- Ryde Rowing Club declined to take part in the regatta.
