THERE were excellent wins for the men's and ladies' teams of the Isle of Wight Hockey Club on Saturday.
POOLE MEN 1, ISLE OF WIGHT MEN 2
THE men’s first team travelled to Dorset expecting a tough game against Poole — and so it proved.
The Island's defence held firm, until a skewed clearance found an unmarked attacker, who put a wayward shot in off an Isle of Wight foot.
Isle of Wight regrouped, settling into the game, with Gareth Holmes, making his first team debut, finding Tom Young, who won a penalty corner.
From it, Adam Payne calmly slotted home to level it.
The Island came out fighting in the second half, with an aerial ball finding Young, who fired past the advancing keeper, only to see it narrowly miss the post.
Isle of Wight kept up the momentum and when Finn Woodford pounced on a poor clearance, his shot smothered by the Poole keeper.
Gould then managed to win another penalty corner for Payne to fire home and give Isle of Wight the lead.
Goalkeeper, Steph Boyd, marshalled his defence well to keep the Island at bay.
HAVANT LADIES IV 0, ISLE OF WIGHT LADIES II 2
ISLE of Wight's Ladies had to be at their best to come away from Havant with a positive result.
The Islanders got off to the best possible start — Sophie Parkhouse adding another goal to her season tally early on.
What followed was an even game for most of the half, with several efforts going close for both sides.
Isle of Wight got their second through Anya Clarke.
Havant ramped up the pressure in the second half, playing some lovely hockey through the midfield which their forwards did not make the most of.
But the Island kept their cool and defended well — and could event have added to their tally at the end.
