ISLE of Wight pro golfer Brandon Robinson Thompson has qualified for one of the world's top events, The 151st Open — a feat understood to be the first of its kind for any Islander.
Brandon, who grew up in Freshwater and who developed his game as a young hopeful at Freshwater Bay Golf Club, qualified for The Open as second best in final qualifying at Royal Porthcawl in Wales.
The Islander, 30, secured one of the five Open spots available after carding an excellent -4.
Brandon, who attended Carisbrooke High School, has been in blistering form lately.
He secured the £15,000 prize and his place at next month’s ISPS HANDA World Invitational after easing to a three-shot win at the NI Open at Galgorm.
In February, Brandon also claimed his maiden MENA Tour title in the second of the two-week swing in Egypt.
Currently 833rd in the world rankings, his latest successes will no doubt propel him further up in the coming days.
Brandon is currently playing in the Made in HimmerLand tournament in Denmark, in preparation for The Open, at The Royal Liverpool, starting on Thursday, July 20.
Brandon once won a silver medal for the Isle of Wight at the Island Games on home turf in 2011.
