THE heat will be on for a team of golfers are in Spain next week aiming to bring a prestigious national trophy back to the Isle of Wight.
The Ryde Golf Club team have already reached the semi-finals of the Annodata National
Fives competition for all clubs in the United Kingdom.
And on Monday, they fly out to the Jack Nicklaus-designed Montecastillo Golf Club in Spain,
to see if they can go all the way and lift the coveted trophy.
Along with the UK's Woburn, Foxhills and Drax golf clubs, the Islanders have battled their
way through to the last four.
Ryde’s team comprises Paul Moreton (captain), Darren Thompson, club captain Steve Tutt,
Lee Cawley, Tom McInnes and Richie Harrison.
Two other members, Aidie Adams and Richard Bond, took part in earlier rounds.
They have already beaten seven opponents in the singles matchplay event — and have no
intention of stopping now.
Paul said: “While it is nice to have got this far and be on the plane to Spain, we
think we have a good chance of winning the whole event and bringing glory for Ryde
Golf Club.”
Wightlink has sponsored their travel, alongside backing from Island companies Wight Ices, Wight Windows, Island Ales, JL Removals and Storage, Gold Plumbing, The Electric
Center and Wight Embroidery.
“Club members have also been very supportive. We would like to thank everyone who has got behind us," Paul adds.
“We are grateful to the supporters who are joining us in Spain at their own expense.”
After flying out on Monday, they have practice rounds the following day before the draw takes
place for Wednesday’s semi-finals.
If the Ryde team win that match, they will be straight into Thursday’s final. If not, they will battle it out in a third-place play-off.
Phil Delaney, Wightlink's commercial director, said: “We are delighted to support Ryde golfers
aiming for glory in Spain.
“The Island is home to so many great sportspeople and a win in this top tournament would
be a great feather in the Ryde club’s cap.”
