However, Winchester fought back, scoring a try and penalty to narrow the margin to 8-12 midway through the first half.

The Hurricanes regained momentum, with fly-half Anthony Burr's crossfield kick setting up winger Ashley Smith for their third try.

The hosts responded with a quick tap penalty try, closing the gap to 13-17.

Sandown finished the first half strong, securing the try bonus point with Luke Hunter's try, leading 13-22.

The second half started with Sandown reclaiming possession in Winchester’s 22 and working their way up to their five-metre line, and, another strong scrum, Burr’s try and conversion extended the Islanders' lead.

Despite yellow cards for both teams, Sandown maintained control. Winchester exploited numerical advantage late on, scoring another try to make it 18-29.

The final whistle brought jubilant celebrations for the Hurricanes as they secured promotion and the league title.

Damien Marriott, SSRFC director of rugby, said: “Clinching the league title is a remarkable achievement, and I could not be prouder of the players' dedication and perseverance, as well as the coaching staff and supporters who have stood by us throughout the season.

“It is a moment to savour and celebrate as we reflect on the hard work and sacrifices that have brought us to this triumphant moment.”

Rugby action is not completed for the Hurricanes in the 2023/24 season, as next Saturday (April 13), they host Trojans RFC Vets in the semi-finals of the Hampshire Vets competition.

Meanwhile, the 1st XV were awarded a walkover in their Papa Johns Community Cup first round fixture, and are waiting on results to see who they will be playing in the second round.
