THE Wightlink-Wight Mountain Cycle Race Team experienced exhilarating highs — and a few bumps — at two recent races across the UK.

On July 21, the mountain bike squad took on the National XC MTB Championships at Dalby Forest, North Yorkshire.

Despite the stiff competition, the young riders embraced the challenge, with Ewan Cook and Alfie Haydon riding strongly within the Open Junior category.

"Ewan had a good start moving up into eighth place," the team reported.

However, an over-cautious approach saw him lose a couple of places, finishing just outside the top eight, despite his spirited effort.

Nick Earley, in the Open U23 category, ranked 18th out of the field of 20, got off to a good start and moved up through the field to finish 13th.

The racing action continued two days' later, with Kev Chant, Jack Davies and Chris Marsh battling a field of almost 80 cyclists in the RCR Fatcreations Goodwood Races.

The fierce race concluded in a thrilling sprint on the final lap.

Chant cruised to victory — finishing more than a bike's length ahead of his neatest challenger.

Chant's victory was lauded by the team, with Chant himself saying: "I’m really pleased with that result. I needed nine points to retain my second Cat licence, so that’s job done.

"I can now focus more on the National TTs to finish the season."

Other racers, including Allan and MacKenzie Cook, also participated in the supporting fun category events, making it a memorable end to the MTB season for the team.
