Two of our Isle of Wight Wessex League sides have delivered late drama, with Cowes Sports and Newport featuring in our midweek football round-up.

Millbrook 2-3 Newport

Newport progressed to the second round of the Hampshire Senior Cup with a win over Wessex Premier Division side Millbrook last night (Tuesday, September 3).

Kai Grace’s shot early on could only be parried by the keeper, and Jordan BROWNE was on hand to tap home.

The second goal was the best of the bunch, an individual cracker by fan’s favourite Sonny MYRAM, who picked up the ball on the right, cut in, beat two defences and passed the ball into the far corner.

Port’s third came just before half time, as George Holbrook took on four opposition players before being brought down, allowing Michael THOMPSETT to score from the resulting free kick.

The Newport defence held strong in the second half until conceding in the 70th minute, and further efforts rained down on keeper Leon Pitman.

A combination of bar, post and heroic last-ditch defending stopped Port from leaking any more goals until nine minutes from time, when, after two blocks by Pitman, the ball was bundled home.

Newport held on, and their reward is a home tie against National League (step five) side Aldershot Town.

New Milton Town 3-2 Cowes Sports

Meanwhile, the Yachtsmen were in Premier Division action away at New Milton Town this evening (Wednesday, September 4).

The match got off to a great start for Cowes after a ball played from the back through to Scott McFarlane led to a cross into John MCKIE, who met the ball at the penalty spot and slotted home.

Just before the 15-minute mark, the Yachtsmen doubled their lead.

After winning the ball on the halfway line through Finley Phillips, Callum Chase found McKie on the right, whose first-time drilled cross found Will BRIDI for a tap-in at the back post.

The game started to fall apart for Cowes from the 75th minute, with New Milton finding a goal back from the penalty spot.

Into added time, after 90 minutes had been played, a New Milton free kick on the left was finished neatly into the bottom corner.

Moments later, the mainland side completed an unlikely comeback, netting a 94th-minute winner to send the Yachtsmen back across the Solent empty-handed.
