ISLE OF Wight Rugby Football Club (IWRFC) saw their first away game of the season end in disappointment at Millbrook.

MILLBROOK 40, ISLE OF WIGHT 14

This Counties 2 Hampshire fixture was much closer than the final score suggests, with the Islanders showing some encouraging competitive edge in general play.

However, they were unable to defend as well as Millbrook at key moments, which ultimately led to their downfall.

In the early stages, Millbrook scored with ten minutes on the clock — then added a second soon after, following a breakaway move.

Missed tackles were a negative feature of IWRFC's game at times, which led to Millbrook’s third try inside the half-hour mark.

Some muted alarm bells may have been ringing, but the Islanders responded well — playing some fine attacking rugby, with Ben Hart standing out with good carries and a powerful scrummaging performance.

A penalty was taken quickly by Island captain, Luke Blackman, who scored under the posts, which was quickly followed by another try from Martin Newnham.

Both conversions were added by George Huish, leaving the Islanders in Millbrook's sights, trailing 21-14.

However, Millbrook registered three more tries in the second period.

Despite the massive set back after making so much progress, IWRFC conjured some chances to add to their tally — encouraged fans with their performance overall, against their unbeaten opponents.
