A popular South Coast run has been cancelled after forecasted extreme weather conditions.
The Great South Run, a 10-mile road race, was due to take place in Portsmouth tomorrow (Sunday October 20).
Organisers have pulled the plug on the event due to "forecasted high winds and rain".
"High tide levels" and "potential debris" were also cited as reasons why the event will not go ahead.
Affected participants will be able to roll over their positions to next year's race, due to take place on Sunday October 19 2024, or claim a refund in line with the race's terms and conditions.
Hovertravel have offered participants and supporters refunds following the organisers' decisions.
The Great South Run said in an email statement to race competitors: "We're really sorry to confirm that this year's Great South Run (10 miles), scheduled to take place on Sunday October 20, has been cancelled due to the forecasted high winds and rain.
"We’ve been closely monitoring the weather conditions and unfortunately they haven't improved to a point where we can safely stage Sunday’s event.
"The forecasted winds and gusts compromise our event infrastructure including our medical facilities at the finish and around the course.
"This combined with high tide levels, potential debris, and the exposure along the seafront mean that we can’t guarantee the safe delivery of the event.
"Safety of our participants, staff and volunteers is our number one priority.
"We haven’t taken this decision lightly and have been liaising closely with the Met Office, medical & safety teams, local authorities and key stakeholders throughout the week to make the best informed decision.
"We know how disappointing this is and we hope you can understand why this decision has been made.
"Thank you for your patience and understanding."
Race competitors were warned of the potential cancellation last night (Friday October 18) in an email from organisers.
The event said that a call would be made on the race by 12pm today (Saturday October 19), warning competitors that the weather had "worsened" and conditions were "looking more challenging" for the run.
The Great South 5K, Junior, and Mini Great South Run went ahead today (October 19) as planned.
