Two of the Isle of Wight’s most competitive football sides took wins in midweek – with Newport thumping fellow Island side Northwood 7-0 to advance to the next stage of the Gold Cup.

In the third round of the Wessex League Cup, East Cowes Vics got the better of mainland opposition, but the result did not come easy.

The Islanders opened the scoring against Verwood Town on 17 minutes: Scott Jones netting.

On 42 minutes, Jacob Reynolds doubled the Islanders’ advantage, with Caleb Neale the provider.

A third goal on 54 minutes applied some further gloss to the scoreline, with Neale finishing neatly off the underside of the bar.

Verwood cut the deficit just three minutes thereafter, and another late on – from a corner on the 87th minute – set up a nervy finish for the visitors.

Newport, meanwhile, made short work of Northwood St Johns in the Isle of Wight Senior Gold Cup.

They thrashed their lower league opposition 7-0.

Joe Craig opened the scoring on three minutes and Kai Grace scored a quick-fire second a minute later.

Jo Nash bagged himself a hattrick, scoring on the 18th, 69th, and 83rd minute.

Man of the match Brad Young and Henry West completed the scoring, on the 39th and 88th minute respectively.
